Army-Fritz and Macziol-IBM regained their momentum as they forced the United Football League’s top-seeder, Global Smartmatic FC, into a draw, in their match last April 6 held at the University of Makati Stadium.
Global had a good start, especially when striker Izzo Elhabbib, who was approximately three meters away from the goal-post, scored within the first five minutes. Trying to force Army into pressure, Aaron Altiche tried his chances at goal but was unsuccesful as Army stopper Eduard Sacapaño was able to save it. After that, Army was able to control the tempo of the match, though they were not succesfully able to translate possession into goals. However, towards the end of the first half, Kim Relucio was injured and changed the play of Global.
The second half started with both teams quenching to score a goal. In the 53rd minute, Army forward Meliton Pelavo scored the equalizer. In the 65th minute, there was a tention between players that gave Army sweeper Edward Gempisaw his second yellow card, thus being sent off from the match. He first got his yellow card in the 18th minute of the match.
Global tried to catch up, however, they were unsuccesful because of miscommunications and miscomputations between the players.
Army goalscorer Pelavo said that they knew Global is in the top of the league and were very agressive when it comes to offense. According to him, they were more focused on the passing play. “Thank God talaga na naka-goal ako this game, birthday ko pa naman bukas (April 7) (Thank God I was able to goal in this game, it’s my birthday tomorrow),” he shared.
Army will next face Kaya FC, while Global will face its fellow unbeaten team, Air Force. Both matches will be held on Sunday, April 10, still at University of Makati Stadium.
