Global Smartmatic – trying to regain its awesome form – and Air Force
Rider – a team finally playing true to its potential – dispute the
solo lead Sunday in a highly-anticipated United Football League clash
at the University of Makati pitch.
Kickoff is at 4 p.m. with the Airmen looking for their fourth
consecutive victory that would push them to the top of the table for
the first time this season, while Global hopes to recover their deadly
form, after dropping points for the first time last Wednesday.
The top four teams will all be in action with Kaya Smart also battling
Army Fritz and Macziol in the first match at 2 p.m.
Global and Air Force are level at 13 points, but the former is ahead
on goal difference.
Kaya is on a three-game winless run and have registered just a single
point from their last three games, while Army is coming off a 1-1 draw
But focus will be on the Air Force-Global duel, which will mark the
first time the two squads meet since their memorable UFL-LBC Cup final
showdown last January, which Global won, 3-2, on Izo El-Habbib’s late
Global’s defense will have its hands full against the trio of Yanti
Barsales, Ian Araneta and Chieffy Caligdong. The three national
players scored the three goals in the 3-0 victory over Kaya last
But Air Force will also have a tall, creative and quick Global attack
line to deal with. El-Habbib who scored twice in their last meeting
will be back to pair up with the shifty Misagh Bahadoran. El-Habbib
scored the first goal against Army.
Skipper Badrelin El-Habbib will miss his third straight game for
Global because of an injury.
The duo is expected to cause problems for central defenders Joel
Ballo-Allo and Joebel Bermejo, who has been playing out of position
after Ballo-Allo’s partner, Martin Doctora, was suspended.
Kaya will continue to miss Anton Del Rosario and skipper Aly Borromeo,
who are still in the United States conducting tryouts for the national
Meliton Pelayo, who scored the equalizer against Global, Luis
Brilliantes, Roel Gener, Nestorio Margarse and Eduard Sacapano are
among the key players for Army, which has registered a win and three
draws against a single loss so far this season.
